5th Grade Burrito Project

Spanish class is offered bi-weekly to CCS students from Pre-K3 through 8th grade.  Our approach to learning Spanish  consists of a dynamic and exciting experience of culture, dance, music, and language.  By studying Spanish the students at CCS are encouraged to become more aware of the culturally diverse nation in which we live.

Rebeca Perez joined the staff of CCS in September, 2007. Since she was born and bred in Nicaragua, she brings a wealth of experience to our school's newly implemented Spanish program. Rebeca spent six years in the Philadelphia area teaching at the Miquon School and St. Genevieve School in Flourtown. She is licensed as a professional bi-lingual interpreter and has used her expertise at Albert Einstein Hospital as well as various court systems in Norristown and Philadelphia. Along with her educational interests, she enjoys cooking, playing outdoor sports, and reading. Rebeca really enjoys being part of the CCS family.

OVERVIEW

In 5-8 grades Spanish, the primary objective is to build strong language skills in all four areas:  listening, speaking, reading and writing.  In addition to these skills, true competence in another language is attained with simultaneous   development of awareness of the culture in which the language is spoken.  Therefore, students apply and reinforce these 4 skills while developing a realistic, up-to-date awareness of the people and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

CONTENT OUTLINE

The primary text and workbook will provide a general structure for our studies, but additional readings, handouts and materials will be included.  We will strive to work at a pace that is comfortable for all.

The student will be introduced to vocabulary grammatical structures integrated with technology within the context of authentic situations.  She/he will have the opportunity to practice listening to and speaking Spanish in everyday and personal situations in a safe (yet challenging) environment.

Students will be able to use basic vocabulary and grammar and do the following:  describe people, objects, sports, weather, members of their family, what they are wearing, what they are doing, where they live, discuss their likes and dislikes, describe their school day, their classes, their teacher,  describe objects inside their house and responsibilities.  They also will be able to greet and introduce each other, ask and asnwer questions and give opinions.  Students will continue to develop appreciation of rich Hispanic/Latino cultures and their understanding of the global importance of speaking Spanish.

CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE

The success of any language program depends on the consistent use of the language being used inside the clasroom as well as outside of the classroom.  Class participation is an essential part of learning another language.

Active Participation:  consists of appropriate responses to teacher-initiated questions, constructive participation in paired and group activities and voluntary participation.

Passive Participation:  involves being attentive to lessons and discussions, showing a respectful and positive attitude for listening to others and careful note taking.

Quality Participation:  both active and passive is characterized by positive and consistent efforts and making sure to ask questions in class for clarity or deeper understanding of the lesson being taught.  Both active and passive participation is important in class.

RESPECT for others is very important when learning a language.  We always support each other.  When classmates are speaking in Spanish we never interrupt.  We listen attentively, we help when asked, and we always wait our turn to speak.

On Time:  Students are expected to arrive to class on time and be prepared for class.  Lateness is not acceptable without a note from the office or another teacher.  Unexcused absences wil result in the lowering of attendance and participation grade.

GRADING:  Your grade in this course will be based on the following:

  • Homework                                                                 15%
  • Participation/Class Work                                             30%

(includes notes taken and your use of Spanish)

  • Quizzes                                                                       25%
  • Tests and Projects                                                       30%

Extra Help:  extra help is always available for those students in need of it.  Students in need should take the initiative to make an appointment with me so we can find a time that is good for both of us.

Thank you and may God bless you.
